How the Cairo Day Trip Works

Four steps from your Sharm El Sheikh hotel to the Pyramids of Giza.

Your driver collects you from your Sharm El Sheikh hotel in the early morning — pickup time depends on whether you're traveling by air-conditioned coach or by short domestic flight.

  2. Cross Into Cairo

Travel to Cairo either by police-escorted convoy coach across the Sinai and Suez (around 7-9 hours each way) or by a 50-minute domestic flight — your Egyptologist guide meets you on arrival.

  3. Pyramids, Sphinx & Museum With Your Guide

Marvel at the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx from Panorama Point, then explore the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities — home to Tutankhamun's treasures.

  4. Lunch, Souvenirs & the Journey Back

Enjoy lunch at a restaurant overlooking the pyramids, browse Khan El Khalili bazaar or a papyrus workshop, then travel back to your Sharm El Sheikh hotel with memories of Ancient Egypt.

The Full Story

Is a Cairo Day Trip From Sharm El Sheikh Worth It?

What the drive is really like, what you'll see, and how to pick between the bus and the flight.

Sharm El Sheikh sits on the Red Sea coast of the Sinai Peninsula, roughly 500 km from Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza as the crow flies — but getting there is not a quick hop. It’s a genuine day-trip destination, not a suburb, and understanding that trade-off upfront is the difference between a trip that feels like an adventure and one that feels like an ordeal.

The Two Ways to Get There

Tour operators run this route two ways: by air-conditioned bus, or by short domestic flight.

The bus option is by far the more popular choice — it’s the budget pick, and it’s what most travelers book. But it comes with a catch that’s worth knowing before you commit: for security reasons, buses and cars traveling between Sharm El Sheikh and Cairo move in a police-escorted convoy, and the drive itself typically takes 7 to 9 hours each way across the Sinai desert and over the Suez Canal. Do the math and a bus day trip means 14 to 18 hours on the road alone, on top of however long you spend sightseeing in Cairo. It’s a very long day — some tours run closer to a full 24-hour cycle once you count an early hotel pickup and a late-night return.

The flight option cuts that travel time to about 50 minutes each way, turning the trip into a more typical 16-to-18-hour day rather than a marathon. It costs roughly three times as much as the bus, but for travelers short on time, prone to motion sickness on long drives, or simply unwilling to spend most of a vacation day in transit, it’s the more comfortable choice.

Neither option is “wrong” — it genuinely comes down to whether your priority is price or time.

What You’ll Actually See

Both the bus and flight itineraries converge on the same highlights once you’re in Cairo, and they’re worth the trip regardless of how you get there.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are the headline stop. Most tours start at Panorama Point for the classic wide shot of all three pyramids — Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure — before moving closer for photos, an optional camel ride, and a stop at the Sphinx itself.

The museum stop is where you’ll usually get a choice. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), located near the pyramids themselves, fully opened to the public in November 2025 and is now in its first complete year of operation — it houses more than 100,000 artifacts, including the first-ever complete public display of Tutankhamun’s treasures since the tomb’s discovery in 1922. The alternative is the older Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Tahrir Square, central Cairo’s original archaeological museum, which still holds an enormous Pharaonic collection and has more of a classic, old-world museum feel. Most bookings let you pick one or the other — GEM tends to be the more modern, comprehensive option, while the Tahrir Square museum is the more traditional, historic experience.

Lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Pyramids is standard on both itineraries, and many tours build in a stop at Khan El Khalili bazaar or a papyrus and perfume workshop — partly for the cultural interest, and partly because bus tours need somewhere to wait out the return convoy schedule anyway.

What It Costs, and What’s Included

Bus day trips start from around $92 per person, and typically include hotel pickup and drop-off in Sharm El Sheikh, the coach transfer, an English-speaking Egyptologist guide, entry fees to the Pyramids and Sphinx, entry to your chosen museum, and lunch. Flight day trips start from around $293 per person, covering the same inclusions plus the round-trip domestic flight and airport transfers.

One cost that regularly surprises first-time visitors: a visa is required to travel from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo, even for travelers who entered on a Sinai-only stamp that doesn’t require one locally. As of Egypt’s official e-visa portal, a single-entry tourist e-visa costs $30 USD. You can arrange this yourself in advance, buy it directly at Sharm El Sheikh Airport before departure, or have your tour operator handle it for you on the day (typically for a small service markup). Either way, budget for it separately — it’s rarely bundled into the advertised tour price.

Is It Worth It?

For most travelers based in Sharm El Sheikh, yes. The Pyramids of Giza are one of the last surviving Wonders of the Ancient World, and a guided day trip is by far the simplest way to see them without relocating to Cairo for a few nights. The honest caveat is the travel time on the bus route — it is a long day, and travelers who’ve done it consistently describe the sightseeing as the highlight and the drive as the price of admission. If your schedule or stamina is tight, the flight option buys back most of that day for a higher price.

Whichever way you choose to travel, book with free cancellation where possible — Egypt’s convoy schedules, flight timings, and museum choices can shift, and a flexible booking means those changes don’t cost you anything.

"The day was very nice and tiring. However, we visited all the beautiful basic locations of Cairo. We would like to thank our tour guide Hüseyin, who showed us around all the locations written on the tour very well. We had a lot of fun. He told us everything in detail and beautifully, gave us additional time in the locations where we will take photos☺️. However, while coming from Sharm to Cairo, we transferred many times and stopped, it took a very long way."

"Ahmed amer was great. Your was fast paced but what you can expect for a 24 hour trip. Got to see everything as described and a good lunch. Transportation was long but doable and this was a great way to check off Cairo. The GEM was great and personally felt like it was enough time to see each exhibit but perhaps that is because we all skipped the Nile cruise and camel riding so saved some time. Overall, recommend for the price and convenience."
